As the proud owner of a pug named Butter, I can attest to the soul-shattering total fucking cuteness of asking a pug a series of questions and watching him tilt his head back and forth like “Whatchu talkin’ about, Willis?”  I often do this for hours on end, and it has lead to several personal/philoshopical breakthroughs for me.
